Not every contractor does all of it well. Some specialize in cabling only. Others focus on entry and protection systems. A few are full-scope integrators. The question is not whether a company calls itself a low voltage contractor, it is whether they have installed the specific system you need, in a building like yours, more than a handful of times. Trade requirements: the New York patchwork

- New York City runs electrical trade oversight through the Department of Buildings, with separate requirements for low-voltage work, fire alarm installations, and FDNY certificates of fitness for ARCS and other life-safety systems.
- Suffolk County issues electrical trade permits at the county level, including restricted classifications that cover low-voltage trades specifically.
- Nassau County handles electrical trade oversight through its Office of Consumer Affairs, with some towns administering their own requirements on top.
- Westchester County issues trade permits for electricians, while cities and towns up the Hudson Valley set their own rules and often rely on third-party electrical inspection agencies.
- Upstate metros including Albany, Syracuse, Buffalo, and Rochester each have their own municipal trade and inspection processes.

- Verbal quotes only. If a contractor will not put a scope and price in writing, they are not a contractor, they are a liability.
