A “drop” (or cabling run) is a single cabled connection from the telecom room to a work-area outlet — one desk port, one wireless access point, one camera, one door controller. When a contractor quotes “per drop,” that unit price bundles a lot:
- The horizontal cable run itself (Cat6 or Cat6A), pulled from the IDF/MDF to the outlet
- Both terminations — the patch-panel port in the rack and the jack/faceplate at the work area
- The J-hooks, cable tray, conduit sleeves, or other pathway the run rides in
- Labor to pull, dress, terminate, label (TIA-606), test, and certify the run
- Its share of the backbone, rack, and telecom-room build that every drop depends on
That’s why a drop is never just “cable × feet.” Two buildings with identical port counts can price 30–40% apart on pathway and labor conditions alone.

The cost delta isn’t just the spool — installed cable runs about $0.90–$1.55/ft for Cat6 vs. $1.30–$2.00/ft for Cat6A — and Cat6A’s larger diameter fills conduit faster, is stiffer to dress, and takes longer to terminate cleanly, so the labor premium often exceeds the material premium. For new construction or a 15-year horizon, Cat6A usually wins; for a short-horizon fit-out with modest bandwidth, Cat6 is often the right economic call.
Material vs. labor: where the money goes
On most New York commercial cabling, labor is 60–70% of the installed cost — and it’s the line that swings most by geography. A foot of Cat6A, a keystone jack, and a panel port cost roughly the same in Syracuse as they do on Sixth Avenue. The labor does not.

Why New York — and NYC especially — costs more
This is where a national cost calculator gets New York wrong. Several NY-specific factors stack on the base install:
- Prevailing wage on public work. Any project touching public funds pays the NY DOL prevailing wage — a defined base rate plus a supplemental benefits package that, for NYC electrical/teledata work, totals well above the private rate. - Union density in NYC commercial. In Class-A Manhattan towers, IBEW Local 3 labor is often effectively required by the building or the GC, setting the floor even on private work.
- Vertical buildings. Riser runs between floors, core drilling, sleeve fire-stopping, and freight-elevator coordination add hours a suburban single-story job never incurs.
- Plenum requirements. NYC commercial ceilings are typically plenum spaces, requiring plenum-rated (CMP) cable — a material and code step above riser-rated CMR.
- Building access and rules. Certificates of insurance, union-only buildings, after-hours-only work windows, and DOB/filing overhead all convert directly into cost.

Cost by project type
- Occupied office fit-out / MAC work. Highest per-drop labor (working around people, after-hours, fished walls). Lowest total when the count is small.
- New construction (Division 27). Best per-drop economics — open ceilings, coordinated with the trades, high count. This is also where prevailing wage most often applies, because these are frequently public projects.
- Data center / colocation. A different unit entirely — high-density structured cabling, hot/cold-aisle containment, and fiber backbone dominate; priced by the cabinet and the fiber/copper mix, not by the office “drop.”
How to get an accurate number
A real quote needs five inputs, and any contractor who prices without them is guessing:
- Drop count and locations — a floor plan marked with ports beats a verbal count.
- Cable grade and warranty tier — Cat6 vs. Cat6A; do you want a certified 25-year channel warranty?
- Building conditions — occupied vs. open, plenum, riser access, floors involved.
- Whether prevailing wage applies — public funding or a union building.
- Schedule constraints — after-hours, phased, hard deadline.
One thing worth insisting on regardless of price: the crew’s credentials. A system carrying a manufacturer 25-year channel warranty has to be installed by certified technicians with full test documentation, and the design behind a large job should be done to a real standard — ideally by a BICSI-credentialed designer (RCDD) and built to TIA-568.
